Renewable energy & grass fed lamb

The proposed Blind Creek Solar Farm project is located on pastoral land approximately 8km north-west of Bungendore, NSW.

The project comprises the construction and operation of a solar farm with an estimated capacity of up to 350MWac and associated infrastructure, including a substation and battery storage of nominally 300MW / 600MWh.

The project was founded by local farmers with a multi-generational connection to the site and to the local community, together with a team of renewable energy experts. The characteristics of the project reflect their vision to co-locate regenerative agriculture with solar, engage in genuine community consultation and include the community in the project’s financial benefits.

The goal is for renewable energy production to co-exist with organic grass-fed lambs, regenerative agriculture, a soil carbon sequestration project and restoration of biodiversity. Once constructed, the up to 350MW solar farm will produce up to 735,000 MWh of electricity per year – enough to power approximately 124,000 houses.

The economic benefits of the project to the local community will be significant, including jobs during construction and operation, as well as flow-on effects to local businesses through use of local amenities such as accommodation, restaurants and shops, for example.

Also integral to the project, is the Community Benefit Sharing Scheme. Based on a 350MW project, the community and neighbours will benefit from a share of between $2 and $3.5 million, depending on whether the funds are distributed upfront or over the life of the project.

The project is currently going through the Development Approval process: https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects

*Equivalent homes powered are based on the average household consumption (middle income household typical use) at 5.9 MWh from the AER report on "Annual report performance of the retail energy market 2014-15"

Greenhouse emissions saved are based on a full fuel-cycle emission factor of 0.95 kg CO2-e/kWh or 0.95 tonnes / MWh from National Greenhouse Accounts Factors - July 2017

Average annual emission per car for NSW+ACT during 2016-17 is assumed at 3.14 tonnes CO2-e annually
